The first trip to South America was different from other international trips in many ways. The most important change was made to my photo equipment. I had to leave my “big-n-black” Nikon D-SLR gear at home, and took with me a “little-n-black” compact camera Leica D-Lux 6. Overall, I was satisfied with Leica’s performance during entire travel. It is a very convenient street photography tool (light, handy, fast f/1.4). One of new camera’s beneficial modes is “Panorama shot”. You push a button and move a camera, it takes multiple photos and stitches them together. Easy. In this post, I share some of the panoramas taken in Peru and Chile. Note, the “angle-of-view” of these images is close to 180 degrees.

As usual your photos are gorgeous. What kind of camera or lense are you using for the panorama shots?

Thank you, Tammy! These panoramas have been taken with Leica D-Lux 6 (“Panorama Shot” mode)

These panoramas are breathtaking! I feel like I was actually standing on the mountain with you, taking it all in!

Thank you, Jess! I remember someone standing on the mountain with me… So that were you ;)
My favourite panorama here is “Rapa Nui from volcano Rano Kau”. In that photo you can see entire Easter Island. There is the Pacific Ocean on the left, right, and, if you look closer, you can see the ocean in the middle part of the photo (at the horizon, between the mountains). There is about 400 meters (1,300 ft) of land behind me (Orongo village).

Lovin’ these panoramic shots Memo! Holy cerulean that is some BLUE water. Oh Yeah! Btw, as soon as your page opened to these, Deep Dish queued up in my music rotation and I gotta say it’s not a combination I’d have planned but it works well together. :-D

Thank you, Maria! for the comment and tip. I have tried Deep Dish’s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TDdN_ARBAI with panoramas… boosted my morning energy :)

Those panoramic shots are really breathtaking! Feels like I’ve visited 13 places in the world in just one minute… :)

Thank you, Jemma! Glad you like the panoramas.
Those photos are stunning ! I have recently been in Peru and fell in love with the country. It’s so beautiful over there. I have never been to Easter Island but your photos make me want to go now.

I fell in love with Peru too, Freya! I guess no one can resist its beauty :)
You should, definitely, go to Easter Island. I would recommend to plan at least four full days for the trip. I was there three full days/four nights and felt like I needed another day to fully enjoy the island.
You did very well using the Leica in panorama mode, Alex. These are all fine images. I really like that view of Machu Picchu because it gets away from the classic travel image of it. Here, there’s much more to see.

Thank you, Andrew! I was surprised to see how Leica’s software stitched the images together. Panoramas look like images taken with a wide angle lens. One defect- if you look closer, you can see the “stitches” (vertical lines). Hopefully, Leica guys will find a way to fix that issue.
Totally agree with you on Machu Picchu statement.

I would love to go to South America one day. I just hear so many great reports about it. It seems like an amazing place.
Thanks for your comment, Spencer. You should, definitely, visit South America. I’ve enjoyed Chile (Santiago and Easter Island) and Peru very much. I haven’t been to other countries yet.
Great photos! The sea and the sky are so blue and the hillsides are so green! Everything is so clear and crisp!

Stunning photos. I love the panoramic mode, but it’s something my D-SLR doesn’t have, and am considering getting a smaller camera so I can do it. I’ll look into the Leicia. I’ve never heard of that brand.
South America is next up on my list – I’m hoping for next summer…if I can wait that long!

Thanks, Jessica! I was happy to leave my D-SLR gear at home this time. These days almost all compact cameras have Panorama mode. Do some research on Panorama shots by a camera you are considering ;) You may also wish to take a look at the twin brother of Leica camera I have – Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7.
