I’ve never been so blown away! Ivan Aivazovsky, Karl Briullov, Konstantin Makovsky, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Surikov, Victor Vasnetsov… and their Masterpieces exhibited under one roof, the roof of The Russian Museum!
The State Russian Museum (formerly the Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III) is the largest depository of Russian fine art in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The museum was established 120 years ago (on April 13, 1895), upon enthronement of Nicholas II to commemorate his father, Alexander III. Its original collection was composed of artworks taken from the Hermitage Museum, Alexander Palace, and the Imperial Academy of Arts. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, many private collections were nationalized and relocated to the Russian Museum creating amazing collection of Russian Art. Today, the museum’s collection includes over 400,000 artworks covering the complete history of Russian art, from 11th century icons to work by contemporary video artists.
***Just FYI,
- The Ninth Wave is an 1850 painting by Ivan Aivazovsky. It is his best known work. The title refers to the nautical tradition that waves grow larger and larger in a series up to the largest wave, the ninth wave, at which point the series starts again.
- During the Siege of Leningrad (1941-1944, World War II), a lot of artwork items were moved to Moscow for safety reasons. However, not all of them have been returned to Saint Petersburg. Most of them are exhibited in The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Don’t miss the Tretyakov Gallery museum when you visit the Capital of Russia.
