Barcelona, Spain is one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in Europe. It is famous for having about 130 hectares (equals to 260 football fields) dedicated to “pedestrian-only” streets/zones. Before the 1992 Olympic Games, there were no beaches in the city and the seaside was owned by the local industries. But, when Barcelona decided to host the Games, the city was rebuilt, new parks and pedestrian streets were created, and the seaside was converted into a leisure zone. Now the 2nd largest city of Spain has 4.5 kilometers of sandy beaches (2.8 miles). 10% of the city is covered by parks. Over 35% of trips taken by people around the city are walked or biked and not done by car. The most walked streets in Spain are in Barcelona – Portal de l’Ángel and La Rambla. Both streets lead to Plaça de Catalunya, the busiest square in town. Approximately 3,500 pedestrians walk down the Portal de l’Ángel every hour. Today, Barcelona is the 4th most visited city in Europe (after London, Paris and Rome). There are millions of people on the streets of Barcelona and as many street photography opportunities [wink & smile]
