The FIFA World Cup Brazil starts today. Congrats to all soccer/football fans around the globe! In this post, however, I publish a photo story about totally different sport and place that is not related to the game of soccer.
The Turner Field is a baseball park located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was originally built as Centennial Olympic Stadium to serve as the centerpiece of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Since 1997, it has served as the home to the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball (MLB).
If you travel to Atlanta, you might want to consider visiting Turner Field, one of the Atlanta’s Top Tourist Attractions. And I would recommend to do it in the nearest future. Why? The Braves’ lease at Turner Field expires at the end of the 2016 season. Instead of renovating Turner Field, the Braves announced that they would vacate the ballpark after 2016 for a new stadium to be built in Cobb County, north of Atlanta. The majority of Cobb County residents do not support the decision of building a “traffic maker” next to the most busiest highway of Atlanta, especially paying for the construction with their tax dollars. But that’s another story… Site clearing has already started. Construction will begin February 18, 2015 with final completion by February 21, 2017. Turner Field will remain the “Home of the Braves” for only two more seasons. These photos were taken during Atlanta Braves vs Seattle Mariners day game on June 4, 2014.

Your pictures are as spectacular as ever, Alex! They definitely tell the story of attending an afternoon at America’s Pastime. I’ve been a baseball lover all of my life and with no disrespect to American Indians I’ve always wanted to attend a game at Turner Field to listen to the Tomahawk Chop chant! :)

Thank you, Mike. Glad you like the pictures. Honestly, I am not a baseball fan. So the Tomahawk Chop chant is one of not many things I enjoy during the Braves’ games [smile]
For those who don’t know what Mike is talking about, see the last two photos at the bottom of this post , before the panorama shot. “Atlanta Braves” uses Native American name and its logo is “Tomahawk”. “The Tomahawk Chop” is a cheer fans perform to support Atlanta Braves, the “chopping” motion, a repetitious bend at the elbow, to symbolize a tomahawk swinging down, accompanied by this war chant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emQ6_PrRzIk

“…Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don’t care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
At the old ball game.”

Your photos are beautiful! What will happen to the old field? I always find it sad when something that has been around for a long time is cast away for something “shiny and new.” Such a shame.

The mayor of Atlanta has said that Turner Field will be demolished.
Yes, it is very sad, Michelle. But, what strikes me more is that taxpayers will be paying for the new stadium…

Being from the UK, I’m not even sure I know the rules of baseball, but would love to see a game live in the US – you can feel the energy of the crow through the photos!

After 10+ years of living in the States, I am still new to the rules of baseball, Catherine [smile]

It looks like a great ball field now. I love going to baseball games. I generally go to Tropicana field in Tampa about once a month. A lot of people say that Tampa needs a new ball field, but there isn’t enough money. Hopefully the new ball field in Atlanta will be as nice as the one in your photos!

Correct.

Thanks, Shah. The Turner Field has been transformed into Georgia State’s Panthers’ football stadium.
